If You Have Yet To Register, Now Is the Time

In barely six weeks, the 64th Annual Convention of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting will gather in Kansas City at the familiar Westin Crown Center.

Are your registered? You will not be receiving a Postal mailing to register for the Convention and to make your hotel registration.   You can do so at www.nafb.com or by calling the office at 816.431.4032. In fact, all you need to know about the Convention is on the NAFB Web site.

Our theme "Making Waves, Lifting Tides" highlights the powerful research NAFB will unveil on Thursday, November 13 -- the NAFB National Producer Media-Use Wave Study. Make plans to attend the session, from 2 to 3 p.m. that afternoon, just before the Annual Membership Meeting and individual member Council meetings.

The NAFB Foundation Luncheon again will officially open the Convention at 11:30 on Wednesday, November 12. That afternoon will feature two educational sessions, including a shared rural lifestyle panel with the NAMA "Trends in Agriculture" event at the Hyatt. Our opening reception will be that night at 6 p.m.

Friday, November 14, offers a morning trip to the Kansas City Board of Trade and a special afternoon professional development workshop. And of course, count on all the fun, networking, and some surprises.

Don't wait to register -- our room block at the Crown Center Westin is not unlimited.

On the Marketing & Promotion Road: Mike Parry

It's October and I can't wait for Halloween and costumes. The grandkids are so excited about trick or treating, that's all they talk about.  Their expectations of that evening are very high.   Just thinking of the unknown amount of treats gives them an adrenaline rush, like the sugar high from the candy.

I think that's where I'm at with the 2008 National Producer Media-Use Wave Study. I'm so excited for the release at the November Convention that I can hardly stand it. Every day I think about the data being collected and how it will help so many effectively place marketing programs by having the most current information available on all media use.

I can see it now, November 12, 2008, watching all the dignitaries walking down the red carpet to view the presentation. Look at them, walking through the spinning spotlights in full dress. Can you see them . .  . .John Deere, Syngenta, Monsanto, Mosaic, Case IH. Oops, reality check here.   So maybe there won't be a red carpet for the release of the Wave Study, but there will be eye-opening, mouth-dropping data presented that will surely keep the industry buzzing for quite some time. Hope to see you at the NAFB Convention.

A quick recap of September: I never made it to Des Moines as time got away from me. It was three days in Milwaukee, starting with the Open Roads agency and John Anderson. On to Bader-Rutter, it was an enlightening visit with Jacci Buehl and staff. It was then down to Park Ridge, Ill., and a good discussion with Will Murphy and Company at Farm Journal Media.

Not too much time to rest as I was back home and then off to Austin, Texas, speaking about our Rural Lifestyle Report at the NAB Radio Show. I'll be talking with you more down the road about my NAB Radio Show experience and some things I heard that you need to hear too!  Stay tuned for more on that.

I finished off the month with a trip to Kansas City and a couple of meetings. Your M&P leaders met with  research firm Market Directions about NAFB interests in taking the "next" step with our Rural Lifestyle research. Susan Spaulding and Lyssa Surface gave us some things to think about. Then it was a visit with Barry Nelson and Eric Hodson at John Deere. Again one comes to realize that with every business, change is inevitable. Thanks to Barry and Eric for a heads-up on changes at John Deere.

As always, if there is anything I can help your organization with give me a call or shoot an e-mail.

Until next time . . .

"Success is a journey, not a destination."

Secretary of Agriculture Confirmed Speaker at Convention

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer will kick-off the 2008 NAFB Convention on Wednesday, Nov. 12 with a news conference. Broadcast members will want to schedule their arrival at the Convention to be on hand for the Secretary's remarks at 11 a.m. The Secretary's visit will come just eight days after the Presidential Election.

Secretary Schafer was sworn in as the 29th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on January 28, 2008. He served as North Dakota's governor from 1992 to 2000 and made diversifying and expanding North Dakota's economy, reducing the cost of government and advancing agriculture his top priorities in office.

Schafer was elected chair of the Republican Governors Association in 2000 and that same year he co-founded and co-chaired the Governors Biotechnology Partnership to increase public understanding and support for the benefits of agricultural biotechnology.

After leaving office in 2000, he co-founded Extend America, a venture capital-backed company, to provide wireless voice and high-speed data services to commercial and residential customers in five rural Midwestern states. He also served as a director of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.

National Officer Candidates Announce Intentions

Two NAFB members have announced their intended candidacy for National Vice President of NAFB.

Lindsay Hill
Buckeye Ag Radio Network/ABN Radio

Lindsay began her radio career working as a studio producer and delivering market reports for ABN Radio. From there, she advanced to the position of coordinating producer of the television show AgriCountry. She worked as a marketing executive for Ohio's Country Journal before moving on to a broadcast and sales position at WRFD-AM with Ohio Farm Radio.

In 2005, she and her husband, Andy Vance, launched The Buckeye Ag Radio Network. Then in early 2007, the couple took over operations of ABN Radio, bringing Lindsay back to the place she got her start.

Lindsay was raised in DeGraff, Ohio and eventually returned to her family's home farm, where she serves on the planning committee for the Top-of-Ohio Ag Tour.

Lindsay joined NAFB immediately upon embarking on her career as a farm broadcaster and has served as both a Broadcast Council and Management and Sales Council member. She has been nominated for the NAFB Horizon Award, served as co-chair of 2007 Washington Watch, has moderated discussion panels and participated in the Changing Business Models panel during the 2007 NAFB Convention.

Lindsay serves on the executive committee for the Ohio Agricultural Council, as chair of the annual Ohio Agricultural Hall of Fame ceremony. She was recently nominated by Congressman Jim Jordan and selected to receive the prestigious William Oxley Thompson Award from the Ohio State University Alumni Association recognizing early career achievement.

Tricia Braid Terry

WOSU, ABN Radio Announce New Partnership

WOSU Public Media has announced a new partnership with ABN Radio, the largest farm radio network in Ohio. ABN will relocate their headquarters to WOSU facilities on the Ohio State campus in Columbus in early 2009.

According to WOSU General Manager Tom Rieland, "This partnership is a perfect match for WOSU and ABN and supports the mission of both of our media operations and Ohio State. It's a unique opportunity that could lead to many interesting programming collaborations in the future."

The announcement about the new endeavor was made on the first day of the Farm Science Review, the annual outdoor agricultural show hosted by the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Lindsay Hill, chief marketing officer for ABN, said announcing the partnership at the Farm Science Review was only natural.

"Farm Science Review is the university's largest annual celebration of agriculture, so it is only fitting that this event would serve as a stage for unveiling these plans," Lindsay said. "Having the university's president, E. Gordon Gee, on hand was also important because he shared in this vision early on, recognizing the synergies it would provide."

ABN plans to move early next year, pending the completion of studio renovations. The company produces agricultural radio programming that is heard on over 65 stations across Ohio and provides programming for five other states as well.
